Mowden girls take centre stage in RBS 6 Nations

LAST weekend saw Darlington Mowden Park RFC's women taking centre stage in international rugby. Tamara Taylor and Katy McLean, members of the Sharks women's team, played for England against Scotland in the RBS 6 Nations and Mowden Under-17s players Sally Austen, Kathryn Parker and Katherine Hobson represented the English Colleges against the Welsh Colleges.

Tamara Taylor is a stalwart of the elite England Women's squad and represented her country in the World Cup last year in Canada but it was 21-year-old Katy McLean's first senior cap.

Tamara played the full game, playing a crucial role in the massive 60 points victory against Scotland, whilst Katy came off the bench in the latter stages of the match to convert a try and add to England's score.

Both Tamara and Katy are named in the squad that will play Italy on Saturday in the next round of the RBS 6 Nations.

Meanwhile, Sally Austen, Katherine Hobson and Kathryn Parker were playing for the English Colleges against Wales.

Although well established members of Mowden Park's Under-17s girls' team, the three were eligible for selection as students of Darlington's Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College where they are all studying their A Levels. It is the second time that the girls have played against Wales at this level and all three started, with Kathryn Parker having the accolade of being Vice Captain.

Anita Blackburn, spokesperson for Mowden Park and Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College said: "Women's rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and Mowden Park RFC is at the cutting edge of this development.

"Darlington is certainly on the map as far as women's rugby is concerned and Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College is proud that its students are making their mark on both the local and international rugby scene."
