Katy helps claim Six Nations crown.
The North East is maintaining its reputation for producing rugby greats with the star of the all conquering England Women's team.

Katy McLean, of South Shields, could be described as the female Jonny Wilkinson after scoring a penalty and kicking a conversion to help the national team beat Ireland 17-7.

And the 22 year old is unfazed by her comparison with England's record penalty kicker.

Katy, who works for football charity the Sunderland Foundation, said " I get the comparison a bit more now that women's rugby is a bit more renowned."
" The men's team are struggling a bit now. Obviously we really want them to do well, but it's nice to know that we are doing better than them." Her points tally last week helped the women's team claim their record - breaking thrid consecutive Six Nations crown - the pinnacle of Katy's 16 years in sport.

Spurred on by her parents David, 53, and Catherine, 53, both from South Shields, Katy, took up rugby when she was six, playing for local team Westoe.

She later joined the Novocastrian rugby club, Thirsk Sharks and is currently with Darlington Mowden Park Sharks.
While studying in Sunderland, she dabbled in the University football team, but last year was selected for the international rugby squad and has been a regular starter since.
" It's an honour to play for your country at anything." she said. " The girls are really close as well because a lot of us have a come up from the junior squad.
